Welcome to the Opto-Mechanics Lab
This lab is focused on the use of optical equipment for the measurement of mechanical phenomena and verify it using Finite Element Modeling. The O.M.R.L. uses a variety of optical techniques to measure deformations in electronic packages at elevated temperatures. Currently the lab is set up for four different experiments.
1) PEMI II -Moire' Interferometry.
2) Shadow-Moire'Interferometry.
3) Twyman Green Interferometry.
The experimental results are also verfied using Finite Element Modeling.
Under the expert guidance of our new and experinced co-director of the lab. from IBM, Prof. Park, we have come up with two new methods of mesuring the warpage in any electronics component and also MEMS devices.
4) 3-D Image corelation Aramis System.
5) Far Infrared Fizeau Interferometry - FIFI.
All of the above tools are to measure both in-plane and out of plane deformations , which can then be utilized to obtain the strain and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of a particular package.
In plane deformations or warpage's, due to thermal loads can be measured by using Moire' Interferometry.
Out of Plane deformation can be measured using Shadow-Moire Interferometry, FIFI and Twyman-Green Interferometry. Twyman-Green Interferometry is performed at room temperature, and at much higher resolution than Shadow-Moire.
The new system Aramis and Far Infrared Fizeao Interferometry measures both inplane and out of plane deformation.
This website offers gives detailed information on these experiments, including their capabilities. We have included several papers produced by members of this lab, for information and reference.
Also all the experimental results are verified by using numerical analysis using ANSYS© , ICEPACK©, MatLab© and FLUENT© .
Our laboratory is part of the Mechanical Engineering department in the Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering & Applied Science of Binghamton University.
